Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge Technology for the First Time.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the US and Australian Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review technology will be launched at Wimbledon this year.

Athletes are granted the option to contest particular rulings made by the chair umpire, following the system currently in use at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation is slated for use on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the Championships and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step follows just a year after the All England Club introduced ELC, which terminated the centuries-old role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players cannot to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the umpire to re-examine other decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or person during play.
  • Potential hindrance at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be no limit on the number of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in Indian Wells recently, where a top player initiated the review system against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not exclusive to major tournaments. It was adopted at the American major since 2023 and the Aussie Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews implemented at all of its events.

Other Changes

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This solves situations where the crowd have sometimes been unsure whether a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly a century of days to go until the beginning of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
