Government Official Confirms MoD Looking at Potential Threat from Chinese Cars, as Staff Advised to Avoid Secret Talk in Vehicles.

An defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is actively looking into the potential threats associated with Chinese vehicles, and staff have been instructed to refrain from discussing secret matters in all cars.

Safety Advice for MoD Personnel

In a recently aired appearance on a radio station, Luke Pollard addressed reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been instructed not to talk about classified material while travelling in China-made vehicles.

He explained that the MoD is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, but noted that safety is a concern in every contemporary cars.

We have a fleet of tens of thousands of cars in the Ministry of Defence and those vehicles account for a tiny fraction.
However whether you’re traveling in a vehicle from China or a non-Chinese car, what we’ve asked our staff is not to plug MoD devices into their car, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any vehicle, due to the growing risks of eavesdropping that are present in every single automobile, to only have those confidential conversations in secure locations. This is a wise and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about security.

When it was put to him that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard replied: That is exactly what we’re investigating at the moment.”

Broader Defence Background

This revelation follows reports from Norway and Denmark have alerted the United Kingdom to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese-made electric buses, which could allow China to disable buses and cause disruption to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russia spy ship has been shining laser beams at Royal Air Force aircrew, described as a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.

This wider defence environment underscores the importance of strong measures and caution in all areas of official operations, including vehicle use to discussions practices.
